According to reports, during the Niger State governorship and state assembly elections, some voters reportedly displayed their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to politicians and swore to support particular candidates.
According to Daily Trust, the voters received buckets of spaghetti, clothing, and seasoning cubes after swearing to support the candidates.
Particularly in Minna, the capital of the Niger State, and other towns, politicians are said to have courted voters by giving out clothing and food items in their homes.
Some voters asserted that after being asked to display their PVCs and swear, each voter received a yard of fabric and spaghetti.
Jamila Mohammed, a recipient in the Minna neighborhood of Tunga, claimed to have received only spaghetti.
Each person received just one yard of cloth. Even a small child won’t have enough fabric for one yard, so what would one do with it? I collected spaghetti, but there were too many people to get it without fighting. It was shocking to see how women were fighting for spaghetti, she said.
While an anonymous voter in Bida claimed that some electorate rejected the gifts, another voter in Dutsen Kura Hausa, Baba Usman, claimed that some politicians shared rice and clothes with a promise to return with more gifts if elected.
