Former member of the 8th National Assembly Shehu Sani claimed that during the governorship and house of assembly elections in Kaduna State, politicians bought votes by handing out old naira notes to voters.
In the 28 states where elections were held, Information Nigeria reports that quite a few irregularities occurred during the governorship and state house of assembly elections.
In some areas, there was persistent vote buying, violent ballot box snatching, voter intimidation at polling places, and other problems.
Sani claimed that the old Naira notes that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) recently declared legal tender in accordance with a Supreme Court order were used to buy voters’ consciences during the election in a tweet on Saturday.
Additionally, he claimed that Kaduna residents, primarily low-income women, were promised N1,000 to N2,000 in exchange for their votes today.
The Supreme Court’s legalization of Old Naira notes as currency led to their use in Kaduna State as a voting-buying tool.
People, primarily low-income women, were paid between $1,000 and $2,000 for their votes, according to a tweet from Sani.
Remember that Nasir El-Rufai, the governor of Kaduna State, was one of the APC-affiliated governors who brought the federal government before the Supreme Court to demand the return of the old notes.
