President-elect Bola Tinubu has been advised not to appoint a senator from the North as the next president of the Senate by the leadership of a branch of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo.
The secretary general of the group, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, urged Tinubu not to elect a senator who would vote to remove him from office or support his opponents in their opposition to his policies.
Isiguzoro made the call while emphasizing that in 2023, a Christian from the Southeast should be permitted to become the Senate President.

Since there is a Muslim-Muslim ticket running for the presidency, we think the best thing APC can do right now is to allow a Christian to serve as Senate President.
“Any attempt to hand the North back to the Senate Presidency would destroy the nation.
“What we need to start right now is a process of national healing, and the national healing is that of integrating the Southeast since the region has finally accepted the APC, and we know that the party will ultimately produce two governors.
“What we are saying is that the President-elect should do his homework very well; what we are afraid of is that if he doesn’t do his homework very well, he might end up shooting himself in the foot.
“The president-elect must avoid choosing a Senate President from the Southeast who would vote to impeach him or oppose his policies in order to avoid putting himself in a bad situation. “.
He urged the Senate to change its bylaws so that Tinubu’s administration would allow a novice to serve as Senate President.
“He should resist by allowing the old order of the Senate standing rule of the old charter to become the senate president. This will prevent him from caving into the pressure of his critics.
“The Senate must change the rule in order to permit a first-time candidate for the presidency. The Southeast should be given carte blanche if Akpabio can succeed in becoming Minority Leader during his first term in the Senate.
